While there he completed an intense apprenticeship with Master Tanaka, one of Japan's foremost blind acupuncturists, and studied with several experienced "bone-setters" to learn structural manipulations of the body. Though eager to begin practicing this wonderful, natural healthcare style upon his return, he soon realized that as a profession it was still in its infancy in the Midwest. |
Not wanting to move to either coast, he decided instead to enroll at Marquette University and seek a Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy. When he was about half way through the program, his mother became terminally ill with cancer, and he chose to delay his studies while helping to care for her. After several years of fighting, his mother lost her battle with cancer and passed away. After her passing, John again explored the possibility of a career in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. The practice of acupuncture had grown significantly in the 7 years since John had lived in Japan. He enrolled at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine. He then traveled to China to further his studies and knowledge. While there he attended advanced lectures at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and even had the opportunity to teach one of the senior classes. His clinical studies were also advanced while completing rotations at both the First Affiliate and Provincial hospitals in Guangzhou, China. Through this experience he furthered his knowledge of Sports Medicine and Pain Management, as well as General Medicine. Next, John accepted a position as an Assistant Clinical supervisor at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine's student clinic. During that period he also taught seminars and classes at the Midwest College. While not attending to his teaching duties, John opened up his first Private Practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There he treated a wide variety of conditions ranging from fibromyalgia to infertility. In 2003, in keeping with the Midwest College's mission to serve the community, John became Co-Director of the Washington Avenue Community clinic. This venture, funded and organized by the Midwest College, provides no or low cost healthcare to Racine's underserved population. It was also during this year that John moved his primary Private Practice from Milwaukee to Sussex. John is a strong believer in continual education and improvement. Since his initial graduation, John has returned to the Midwest College and attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition. His other education includes working on a Ph.D. at Guangzhou University in China, a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine, and board Certification in Pain Management. John was also one of the first members of the American Society of Pain Educators, and he is currently nearing the completion of a Doctorate in Education. John has a strong belief that through the education of his students, his community, and his patients, the overall health of the community can be greatly improved. That education is the key to maintaining health and avoiding illness, which is the highest form of medicine. | Kristen Busby -- CMT Before becoming a massage therapist, Kristen graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee with a B.A. in Anthropology in 1999.
